Screening Notes: January 12, 2011- Kevin Brown
Setting of the film is in first Perris Island, Marine Corps training camp
The progression of scene transition shows that the story is moving in more of a chopped linear motion, rather than a flashback progression.
The story primarily focuses on the interaction between the DI, Gomer Pyle and Joker. The main noticeable difference is the teaching methods of the DI, and Joker. Joker is subtle in his teachings, and treats Pyle like a child. Whereas the DI uses traditional Basic Military Training (BMT) methods to try and break Pyle. The outcome of the strategies shows when the DI is shot and Joker is spared by Pyle.
The general screening is that we, the audience are an omnipresent viewer of what is going on in the deigisis of the film.
The Setting then turns to Vietnam, where Joker has become the new focus of the narrative. Kubrick still has the audience as the omnipresent viewer for the diegisis.
The general trend is that most of what was taught at Perris Island is thrown out the window, to the extent of disregarding the commanding officer (CO) at the time.
Throughout the duration of the Vietnam section of the film, there is a bitter scence of irony, or duality. For example Joker’s peace button and his “Born to Kill” on his helmet.
The film slowly starts to drag the audience into the deigisis as we follow Joker around the Squad where Cowboy is in. This is done by using various POV shots of Joker, Raptor man, and Cowboy.
Kubrick then sends us back to the omnipresence by using interviews and their presentation to remove us from the character’s perspective, and to give it a documentary feel.
The general tendency of the respect of the chain of command declines as each CO is killed off one at a time and the chain shortens. This eventually disintegrates to the where there is no command and the general attitude is to survive.
Kubrick presents the film by using a song to introduce the setting, and then sends the audience into a dark, comedic spiral into the general climax at the end of the film.
The Film ends on the squad singing the “Mickey Mouse Club” song.
